ABOUT COLON HYDROTHERAPY

 THE SESSION

Colon Hydrotherapy is the gentle infusion of water into the large intestine for the purpose of cleaning it out. It is a safe and effective procedure of removing waste from the large intestine, without the use of drugs or chemicals. Filtered warm water is introduced into the colon with the use of disposable speculums and tubing. The waste is softened and loosened which results in evacuation through natural peristalsis. The process of inserting water and then allowing the water and waste to be evacuated is repeated several times during a session. Client comfort and dignity is always maintained. The speculum/ rectal tube used in the service is only inserted approximately 2 inches into the rectum and the Colon Hydrotherapist is with the client during the 45 minutes it takes to complete a colon hydrotherapy session.

  • A colon hydrotherapy session is usually a comfortable experience, and does not produce any toxicity.
  • Colon Hydrotherapy has shown to be more effective and better tolerated than the standard methods of bowel prep for colonoscopy.
  • The removal of waste should encourage better colon function and elimination.
  • End results are hydration of the colon, waste material is softened and loosened, evacuation is through normal peristalsis and the colon is irrigated and cleaned.

History

  • The first recorded reference to colon cleansing dates back more than 3000 years to the Ebers Papyrus, an Egyptian medical document.  It has been carbon dated to between 1500 and 1700 B.C.
  • The practice has been known since ancient times for treating constipation, which was believed to have been the root of many diseases and illnesses.
  • Hippocrates documented the use of enemas for fevers.
  • Dr. Harvey Kellogg reported in the 1917 Journal of American Medicine that in the treatment of gastrointestinal disease in over 40,000 cases, he had used surgery in only twenty cases.  The rest were helped as a result of cleansing the bowels, diet, and exercise.

Dr. Waddington, in his published work “Scientific Intestinal Irrigation and Adjuvant Therapy” 1940, stated the following: “Abnormal functioning of the intestinal canal is the precursor of much ill-health, especially of chronic disease. Restoration of physiological intestinal elimination is often the important preliminary to eventual restoration of health in general”.

Colon Hydrotherapy was used frequently in hospitals until the 1950’s. In the mid-60’s the use of colon irrigations slowly dwindled until approximately 1972 when most colon hydrotherapy instruments were removed from the hospitals and nursing homes as other medical procedures and prescriptive laxatives became the vogue.

In spite of these “in vogue” medical procedures, a few doctors continued to recommend colon hydrotherapy. The profession continued to grow and the colonic equipment continued its evolution. Today’s technology uses purified, filtered, warm water and promotes both safety and sanitation. It has become an integral part of nutritional health since it is a way to clean out the toxins hiding in one’s colon. This hydration and elimination process yields cleaning and revitalization of the colon and a more efficient functioning body.

The therapy has made a popular resurgence since the 1980s, especially since manufacturers obtained FDA registration. Disposable single-use speculums and rectal nozzles are used.

In 1989, The International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy was established. I-ACT is the premiere association worldwide and advocates for therapist’s education and client safety.  I-ACT certifies individuals at four levels and encourages its members to become nationally certified by the National Board for Colon Hydrotherapy (NBCHT).
